Arriving Separately

arriving-separately-2Have you ever traveled alone to meet a partner or friend somewhere far from home? I always thought A Cup of Jo‘s post about arriving separately for a dinner date sounded so romantic. Probably because it feels so out of character for us….we don’t live in NYC, i.e. we aren’t in walking or subway distance from a date night restaurant and we only own one car. But sometimes, we have met each other in far off places and we’ve discovered that, while sometimes having to travel alone can sound scary or sad, we can make it into a romantic way to meet up far away. We even flew separately to our own wedding in Hawaii. At first I hated the idea, but people were so nice and excited for me as I flew to Hawaii on my own, wedding dress in tow, that I decided it wasn’t that bad. It’s just one more way to keep excitement and adventure in your relationship. arriving-separately-8And if I hadn’t done it, I wouldn’t have been picked up from the airport by this hot Rapa Nui guy. I know we are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to do things like this in our lives, and it probably won’t last forever, so all the more reason to take advantage of it now, right? arriving-separately-5Most recently (although almost a year ago now, so clearly we don’t do this often), we met in Prague. By the way, Prague is a well-guarded secret. Everyone who has traveled there seems to keep it to themselves. But oh my god, it is one gorgeous, romantic city. Add it to your “must go in this lifetime” list. Trust me. arriving-separately-4Wouldn’t it be awesome to just bump into one another on the street in some strange city? That is not at all how it happened, but we can pretend right? In reality, Ta’u was working a job there and I flew in toward the end of it to join him. I arrived while he was working so I took a cab to the hotel, got a key to his room and passed out. Which is how he found me hours later when he finished work. But still, it was pretty amazing to think we had just found each other half way around the world. arriving-separately-3Prague deserves a whole post in and of itself, and we’ll get to that soon. We went in December and the Christmas markets, mulled wine and donuts were irresistible. arriving-separately-6After Prague, we continued on to Paris….now that would be a romantic place to meet up. What if you decided to meet at a certain time on top of the Arc de Triomphe or the Eiffel Tower?

We just finished firming up a bunch of travel plans for this fall, and one of them involves us meeting in the Miami airport to fly together to Easter Island. We haven’t met in an airport before (meeting at baggage claim doesn’t count), and even though it’s a bit more common place, it still sounds fun. So where should we meet? In an airport bar or restaurant? At one of our gates? arriving-separately-1Or on the plane? arriving-separately-7We have lots of options to consider. Would you ever travel somewhere separately? Where in the world would you want to meet your partner?
