Underwater

underwater-12We spent our last afternoon on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) enjoying some much needed beach time after a long three weeks of work. And it was the most perfect day, meaning the water and air were both warm enough that we could play in the ocean much longer than usual. So we got out the GoPro and decided to have some fun. underwater-2I kinda love using our GoPro camera these days because it doesn’t have a view finder (and it’s waterproof). The lens is wide angle enough that if you point it in the general direction of what you want to photograph or film, it will get it. So it brings back a lot of that mystery and excitement film cameras used to have for me, in that you never quite knew what you were gonna get until you picked up the prints. And then flipping through them was full of anticipation as you looked to see if you got one of those perfectly composed and lit shots. The one you saw in your head, but didn’t know if the camera captured quite as well.  underwater-1 underwater-4 underwater-5underwater-11Those were some of the winners from this little experiment. Although the water was cloudier than we had hoped, some of them turned out pretty cool. I’m not convinced we got THE shot, but that just gives us more reason to get back soon and play in the water some more. underwater-8And, we discovered how that feature in Photo Booth on Apple computers was created. You know, the one that distorts your head all funny? It’s mimicking taking a photo of yourself through water. Boom. Mystery solved. underwater-7 underwater-9And well, since we first met (sort of) at this beach, almost first-kissed here (it was definitely, probably, like the 8th or 9th time), and absolutely first got engaged at this beach (we even engraved the beach’s name Anakena on our wedding rings), we couldn’t leave without photographing a little PDA underwater. Just for old times sake. underwater-10Have any of you taken underwater photos of people? We are usually more preoccupied with fish and coral, but since there are few fish and no coral at this beach, we were out of subject material until we realized we could photograph ourselves. It’s harder than it looks to stay under water while taking or posing for a picture. And even harder when your contacts make it impossible to open your eyes. Although have you ever opened your eyes in salt water? Ta’u was arguing with me beforehand that it didn’t hurt him at all, but once we were in the water for a while and he obviously couldn’t stop rubbing his eyes, he admitted it stung like a beast! Too bad we forgot our goggles on this trip.
